“It what?” Arn Gundersson leaped out of bed and motioned for the girl next to him to be quiet. “That isn’t possible, Karl. What do you mean, it’s gone? No, I was busy last night. I didn’t hear anything. I’ll be right there.” He hung up and started dressing.

“What is it?” the girl said. “Did your wife find out about us?”

“No. It’s the bank,” he said. “It’s been demolished according to my vice president. It’s gone.”

“How could a bank be gone? Especially that one.”

“I don’t know,” Gundersson said. “It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard. It’s not possible. Nobody could get near that bank. Nobody. I have to go see what this is about.” He pulled on his shoes and ran for the door. “Stay here,” he called over his shoulder.

He arrived at the scene ten minutes later, and was whisked through the throng of military and special services personnel, most of whom were just standing around with dazed looks on their faces. His vice president came running over. “Come with me,” he said, a horrified look on his face. He took Gundersson over to where the main bank building had been. There was nothing there, just a two acre pit a hundred feet deep. It was full of powdery looking dust.

“Oh my God,” Gundersson whispered. “This can’t be. It’s not possible. What could do this?” Karl looked away.

“Somebody saw something,” Karl said. “They filmed it. It was......I can’t bring myself to say it.”

“What was it?”

“A flying saucer,” Karl said quietly. “It’s on all the news stations.”

“That’s absurd,” Gundersson said. “There is no such thing.”

“You can see it plain as day,” Karl said. It was hovering over the bank. Then you see the thing disappear, and the bank just collapses. It got the other building, too. All of our records are gone. So is the gold, the vaults, and the.....”

“That’s enough,” Gundersson said. “You keep your mouth shut about what was in those buildings. Nobody knows about that. Jesus in heaven,” he sighed. “We’re finished. The families are finished. Why didn’t the military try to do something?”

“The missile system was disabled, nothing worked. By the time they got anything big enough ready to fire, the thing was gone. There was no trace of it on radar. It just vanished.”

“The Americans did this,” Gundersson hissed. “The membership was killed there, now this. It has to be them.”

“But why? The families had complete control of the government.”

“They missed somebody,” Gundersson said, his shoulders slumping as he contemplated what his own fate might be.

“Will our insurance cover the loss?”

Gundersson burst out laughing. “Insurance? Are you serious? All the insurance companies on Earth couldn’t cover one tenth of what was in those vaults.”

“How......much was it?” Karl said.

“Nine hundred trillion just in gold alone. Probably half again that much in silver, jewelry, and rare artifacts. The families are wiped out, Karl. They may have a few billion in other assets, but this disaster essentially finishes them. They will have no power base after this.
